"MAISES" (stories)

Baruch (Burt) Gorenstein submitted the following:

I looked over the list of students that you published in the Jewish Post to find some of my classmates whose whereabouts you seek. I noted a number, and while I can't give you any exact whereabouts, I can give you some clues that might help you narrow things down. They are as follows:

Sara Fireman... married a Torontonian and lived in Toronto. I don't know her married name, unfortunately.

Pichus (Paul) Mogul... Graduated for Uof M (medicine) and as I recall made Alyiah to Israel many years ago. In the past few years, I have asked Sharon Wolchuk, who has children and grandchildren in Israel to search there for him, as he and I were best of friends. To date Sharon has not been able to track him down.

Shimon(Sidney) Zimmerman... died several years ago in Winnipeg, I believe. His widow, Hinda still lives I expect in Winnipeg.

Meyer Zolf... brother to Larry (Leibel) Zolf, whose father as you know was principal of the school on Aberdeen and Salter. Meyer is a chartered accountant who practiced in Edmonton, and , I believe is still there. He should perhaps be retired by now.

Rochelle Youdovich was a classmate. I heard she married and as I recall moved to the USA. I can't tell you anything about the whereabouts of her older brother Avrom.

Monte Tulchinsky...Monte was and ardent Zionist. The family changed their last name to Toole. I'm not certain that "Toole" is the correct spelling. Monte made Alyiah before the creation of the State of Israel.

Monte lived in the south end of Winnipeg and I lived in St. Boniface and we met each morning at the corner of Portage and Hargrave to catch the last Salter Street bus. During the war, as gasoline and rubber (for tires) was rationed, the Salter street bus ran only during morning and afternoon rush hours. The last northbound bus departed Portage and Hargrave at 8:40am. If we missed the bus, we had to take the Selkirk St streetcar and walk from Selkirk and Salter to Aberdeen and Salter.

The bus driver on that route was a guy by the name of Stanley Back. The "three" Peretz School students usually sat in the seat immediately behind the driver. We kibitzed with him frequently announcing " Stand back in the bus please". He was concerned for our welfare and would delay departure from Hargrave and Portage as long as he could whenever one or more of us did not arrive at Portage and Hargrave in time. He would often wait until 8:55 AM before driving away. He was concerned enough so as to prevent, if possible, the "latecomer" from having to take the Selkirk streetcar and walk from Salter and Selkirk to Aberdeen and Salter. I don't know what happened to him.

I recognized many names on the list as I spent some of the best growing up years in Winnipeg. I certainly am looking forward to attending the reunion. I missed the YMHA reunion a number of years ago and I am kicking myself still over that. I hear it was a super weekend. As I did not go through high school at St. John's Tech, I did not go to that reunion either, although most of my friends went to "Tech". I hope that the above can be helpful.

Shalom, Baruch (Burt) Gorenstein.
