My only Peretz Shul story is as follows.
I was probably 4 or 5 years old in a kindergaten class about 1940 or '41 in which we were to hold a parents day. As I was somewhat musical I was chosen to lead the percussion band with a baton. The auditorium was filling up with adults and fellow students when my cousin, Hughie Libling, our triangle player, got stage fright and refused to go on stage. As we did not have a substitute triangle player I was forced to fill in. To this day I am convinced that my career as a major musical conductor was thwarted. I could have been another Lenny Bernstein! Unfortunately, Hughie died a few years ago so I could never find out why he did this to me. As for the rest of my career at Peretz School I can't remember a thing except sitting at a desk trying to write in Yiddish and eventually showing my efforts to my Zaida who was convinced that I would never make it as Jewish linguist. He was right!
