Oy......What a weekend!
From August 1st 4th, 2003, Peretz Shol-niks from all corners of the globe converged and reunited in Winnipeg to honour the I.L. Peretz Folk School’s 90 years involvement in shaping the Jewish community. For all the alumni and former staff who participated, the collective spirit and excitement of decades gone by was rekindled through the language, the music, the community, and the memories. And for those who were unable to attend, be assured that the reunion weekend inspired everyone to continue to celebrate Yiddish language and culture.
From energetic, informal mingling to high-pitched screams of recognition, hundreds of former students and staff remembered the school as “more than a school”, as an institution formative in their lives. Participants enjoyed a weekend of exceptional programs, which included:
• Meeting and greeting classmates and teachers;
• singing the school songs on Friday night;
• hearing Yiddish spoken in every “veenk!”, and in a beautiful, emotional keynote from former Principal Shimshon Heilik;
• being transported to the past in a wonderful gala concert in the very same building where so many Peretz productions took place, the former Playhouse (now Pantages Theatre), kvelling to performances of concert headliners and Peretz alumni Vicki Knight, Kenny Mazlow, Norm Mittleman, Aubrey Tadman, and Herschel Fox;
• enjoying the special performance of the I.L. Peretz Folk School Alumni Choir, assembled especially for the gala concert;
• snapping pictures, swapping photos, trading maises, attending class reunions;
• thrilling to the tributes at the Sunday night dinner;
• riding the tour bus and visiting the ‘hot-spots’;
• and capping off the weekend with a reception at the University of Manitoba.
